Frequently Asked Questions

Please feel free to send us an email if you have additional questions!

Where will the event be held?

The event is being hosted at the Westmark Hotel and Conference Center, 201 Wood Street, Whitehorse, Yukon.

Who is attending?

We are hoping to welcome high school students from the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Yukon, Alaska, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Denmark.

What is the minimum and maximum age for students to attend?

MAC is intended for senior high school students in grades 11 and 12 (16yrs – 19yrs). If you do not fall in that category, contact us directly and we will review your application on a case-by-case basis.

Is there any cost to attend MAC?

There is no cost to attend the event; however, interested students must fill out an application form available on our website – www.ModelArcticCouncil.org

What funding is available to interested students?

Currently, funding is available to support the travel of up to six (6) students from interested organizations/high schools. This funding is limited to Canadian students only and is available on a first come, first serve basis.

Is funding available for Chaperones?

Unfortunately, funding is not available for chaperones, educators, or other non-youth delegates to join us at MAC. An application has been made for additional funding to support the travel costs of chaperones for youth delegates – information will be provided if anything changes.

Will accommodation and meals be covered?

At this point, students will be responsible for covering their own meals and accommodation.  We have negotiated a special rate with the Westmark Hotel and Conference Centre for delegates to MAC.  We anticipate that 3-4 students can share one room, thereby reducing costs as a whole.

How many youth participants are to be included in a “delegation”?

For each “delegation,” it is asked that three (3) students be selected. A maximum of two “delegations” can be registered for the conference, allowing up to six (6) students from each organization or school to participate. We are asking for a minimum of three (3) students per organizations so that they can form one (1) MAC delegation who will be assigned a member state/organization.

When will roles be assigned?

Once the application package is received, delegates will be assigned based on their indicated top five (5) preferences. It will be up to each delegation to select who will participate in each of the three Working Groups. We will work effectively to ensure delegates receive one of their top three choices. Youth will preferably be assigned to a role in which they are not overly familiar. (e.g. a delegate from Norway will preferably be assigned to another Arctic Council country, such as the United States, to provide the opportunity to experience a different viewpoint and understanding of the discussed events.)

How will delegates be trained for the Model Arctic Council?

Prior to the conference, delegates will be able to interact with organizers and staff through our website (http://www.modelarcticcouncil.org), e-mail, Facebook, and Twitter to receive research help, ask questions, and begin preparation for their specific roles.

Once at the conference, organizers and staff will meet with delegates and review conference materials, provide additional information and support, and answer any remaining questions.
Will translation services be offered at MAC?

We would like to be able to offer translation and whispered interpretation (Russian/English) – we have asked for additional funds to support this piece and are waiting to hear back on our application.
Where can students go for more information about MAC?

You can visit our website at www.ModelArcticCouncil.org for more information or contact one of the project officers listed on the website.  Additionally, should students require additional help with their research, youth facilitators are available both via email and by phone throughout September and October to help students with preparing for the event.
